In his book The Medium is the Message, Marshall McLuhan states
"In the name of "progress", our official culture is striving to force the new media to do the work of the old" (76).
Can this be done?
Movement of the still image is oxymoronic. You're thinking of film, which is actually the progression of still images over a set time frame, producing the illusion of movement as our brain fills the gaps. But, consider a medium like a comic book - Sometimes, there still is the perception of movement, or at least the of a lively progression of the content. Between film and a comic book, I figure, the difference is how time mediates the consumption of images: A film has a consistent standard of time, while the comic book's rate of consumption is variable.
This was my idea as I went out on my first photography walk of the week, but the only thing I really liked was a set of photos of a local Fire Department. As the week progressed, and I had to travel further and further for work and family, I found myself returning to some of my favorite photographic themes, buildings, lines, and nature. Before long, I had a selection of photos that flowed into each other in shape, color, and sometimes were connected so loosely that I can intuit that presenting them together is the correct choice.
The selection of films in the above album, when viewed in order, present a story in the same way that I would create a film - As a progression of still images, you could, of course, call the photos of No. 3 a comic book. Although the images are digital, I have declined to use film to show movement where a comic book was always able to do just fine.
Thanks,
